With the global citizen year now upon use, you need to be clear-eyed in your optimism about the change you can bring about. It is often believed that the world’s problems are intractable, that hunger is merely a fact life, that climate change is unavoidable, and extreme poverty will never cease to exist.

However, there’s no denying that world hunger can be dealt with. After all, the current amount of food produced at the moment is enough to fill every belly globally, yet a third of it goes to waste. Keep in mind poverty is man made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings.

So, what do global citizens really believe in? At its core, being a global citizen entails believing that extreme poverty can be eradicated, and that the resources to end it can be mobilized if enough people come together and take the needed action. It entails learning about the systematic inequalities that fuel poverty, such as racial, gender, ethnic, sexual, and economic inequalities.

Most importantly, it is all about realizing that when we use our voices together, we are more powerful and we can ensure lasting change in the mission to defeat poverty, demand equity, and defend the planet at all costs.

Global citizens acknowledge the power of advocacy, of shining a light on overlooked issues to rally people worldwide and mobilize ongoing support from those that can drive real change. We count on advocacy as a tool that helps complement the essential work of on-the ground organizations to ensure access to food and water, education, health care, and more, for the communities that are in dire need.

Remember, global citizens believe in racial justice, gender equity, and climate justice. We believe that an injustice anywhere is an injustice to all of use. With everything said, you should consider joining this movement and start taking action right away to defeat poverty, demand equity and defend the planet. Not to mention it is the ideal time to learn more about the issues facing the world at the moment and how we can all play a part in solving them.
